“Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.” – Luke 9:23 (NIV)
Following Jesus begins where self ends.
In Luke 9:23, Jesus gives a call that is both simple and deeply challenging: If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. This is not an invitation to comfort — it is a call to surrender.
When Jesus first spoke these words, His listeners understood exactly what He meant. In the Roman world, a man condemned to die by crucifixion was forced to carry his cross to the place of execution. It was not symbolic — it was a death sentence. No one carried a cross casually. It was a one-way journey, marked by suffering, humiliation, and finality.
Yet Jesus takes this brutal image and makes it voluntary. Let him deny himself… take up his cross. Unlike those condemned criminals, followers of Christ are not forced — we are invited. This is the paradox of discipleship: we willingly embrace what leads to death — not physical death, but the death of self.
To deny yourself means to lay aside your own will, your preferences, your ambitions, and choose God’s way instead. It is not about self-hatred but about self-surrender. It means saying, “Not my will, but Yours be done,” even when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or costly.
Jesus equates denying yourself with taking up one’s cross. These are not two separate actions — they are one and the same. The cross represents a life where ‘self’ is no longer in control. The person carrying a cross knows they cannot save themselves. Their old life is behind them. In the same way, when we follow Christ, we acknowledge that our lives are no longer our own.
But Jesus adds one important word: daily. This tells us that denying ourselves is not a one-time decision — it is a continual choice. Each day presents new opportunities to surrender. Sometimes it looks like choosing patience over anger, humility over pride, obedience over convenience, or love over selfishness. We do not choose the circumstances that come our way, but we do choose how we respond.
The challenges, disappointments, and sacrifices we face can become our “cross” – not because we seek suffering, but because we choose to carry them in obedience to Christ. In doing so, we reflect His heart and bring Him glory.
Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly. He carried His cross willingly, walking the path of sacrifice out of love for us. Now He calls us to follow in His steps — not perfectly, but faithfully.
Today, the question is not whether the cross exists — it does. The question is whether we will pick it up.
What is God asking you to surrender today? Is there an area where you are holding on to your will instead of trusting His?
Prayer
Lord, give me the strength to deny myself and follow You fully. Help me to lay down my will each day and take up the cross You have set before me. Teach me to live not for myself, but for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
